Working Is Getting In The Way Of Surfing (But It’s Kinda Working Out)
Hello,
I am back! And currently writing to you from Empire Tea & Coffee in Newport, Rhode Island.
Here’s 3 quick updates of what I’ve been working on recently / going on in my life.
#1 Almost every summer, around this time, I find myself wanting to dial back on the amount of time I spend working by about half. Which is ironic because I always seem to get more done. Hence me actually writing an email for the first time in a bit.
I’ll still spend a good 3-5 hours a day working, as I notice I lose my edge whenever I do not spend a portion of the day trying to build something. But right now I am trying to be better about going with the ebbs and flows of life.
#2 My roommates and I picked up surfing, and we’ve been going A LOT.
A month ago we had 2 boards at the house, now we have 9.
And I’m currently trying to make the transition from a longboard (9 feet) down to a shortboard (6’4). For those who don’t surf, the analogy I came up with last night was:
With a longboard the wave is your paintbrush and you are the canvas.
With a shortboard you are the paintbrush and the wave is your canvas.
Just two different ways to ride the wave (longboard is a lot easier).
#3 Work
As far as email marketing and copywriting goes, I’ve found that results can be so contingent on other things happening within the business:
The offer, the brand, what people already think of you.
So even though I am still writing a lot of copy, a lot of clients I’ve worked with recently have needed more of a full scope role where we work on a lot together.
It is a reframe I keep coming back to. If we improve the symptom we might see some results. But if we improve the root cause, we see never ending fruit.
This has meant incorporating more systems, research, improving the offer, building out proper funnels, dialing in on messaging. The whole shebang.
Results have been kick-ass:
Anywho, that’s where I’m at right now.
Much love.
Gavin

On June 20th (this Saturday), I’m playing disc golf for the first time EVER to raise money for the Paul McBeth Foundation!
The Paul McBeth Foundation’s mission is to develop and introduce sustainable disc golf experiences in underserved communities around the world. Since their founding they have installed 383 baskets and built 29 new courses in places like Colombia, Uganda, Mongolia, Kenya and New York City.
This year I’m trying to raise $300!
If you want to support, donate $5 to my page or share with a friend who’s into disc golf! Everything goes directly to the Paul McBeth Foundation and their upcoming project in Ethiopia!
Here is a link to my page to donate or share with a friend :)
