The “I’m Lazy” Bubble

One of my favorite movies of all time is The Big Short.

Christian Bale. Steve Carrell. Ryan Gosling. Brad Pitt.

If you have not seen it, it tells the story of the housing bubble crash of 2008.

I’m a fan for two reasons:

#1

“His name is YANG. He won a math competition in China and he does not even speak English.”

#2

They took the time to build the story up instead of rushing the plot like all these other Netflix movie these days.

The first 45 to 50 minutes of the movie is essentially Steve Carrell’s firm doing research. Trying to figure out whether or not a bubble actually exists.

They fly to Florida and start knocking on doors of apartment buildings.

They interview mortgage brokers who brag about approving loans for people with no income, job, or assets.

And then they interview a stripper who tells them she owns 5 houses and a condo.

Right after that you get the:

You rarely see good movies like this come out anymore.

I actually remember listening to a podcast a while back where Matt Damon and Ben Affleck talked about how Netflix forced them to repeat the plot two or three times throughout their movie to tailor to people watching on their phones.

Kind of sad honestly.

What is equally as sad is that business owners have been convinced by the instagram content gurus that they can just feed ChatGPT a document of how “they sound” and call it a day.

No market research. No conversations with their customers. No idea what their market even wants (or has already bought in the past).

They just wanna be a stripper and have 5 houses and a condo.

No bueno mi amigo…

The people who made a fortune off the 08 housing bubble were geniuses... BECAUSE they did more research than anyone else.

Same goes for those making all the coin today.

I just dropped a video on how I conduct research for my all of my clients (before I even start writing) in our free “Email With Confidence” community.

If you think you’ll actually take the time to implement it, you can watch it here.
